Abbeyfield Kaeo

An Abbeyfield Society, based on Te Runanga O Whaingaroa has developed an Abbeyfield house for five older people in Kaeo in the far north of New Zealand on an attractive site overlooking the village.

The project gained the financial support of the Housing New Zealand Corporation and the local Rununga O Waingairoa has managed the construction phase and Rununga staff will manage the day to day operation of the house.

Severe floods in March and July 2007 throughout the region set the project back because all available contractors were diverted to the critical restoration work. Further bad weather during 2008 has delayed completion but we are pleased to report at August 14th the accommodation and communal areas have been completed and the first residents will be moving in in the next few days.

Government Minister Shane Jones visits the completed house in August 2008. The weather problems meant the landscaping was not completed at the time of Shane's visit.

More images of the completed house can be seen in the slide show below.

The local Society welcomes offers of assistance. If you can help with a donation, or you have time and energy to assist please contact the Secretary. We are also looking for expressions of interest from potential residents.
